Milan Design Week, comprised of Salone del Mobile and Fuorisalone, is the most important event in the world related to interior design. Salone del Mobile, spread over 2 million square feet and 2,000 exhibitors, is the international reference point for the furnishings and lighting markets. Beyond the convention center is Fuorisalone, exhibitions and events spread throughout the entire city. Brands in the design districts introduce their new collections with inspiring installations and nightly parties.
Trends this year included texture in bath finishes, strong geometric forms in flooring and rugs, color palettes with prominent shades of warm clay and terra cotta and blue-green jewel tones, caned elements in furniture, ombre effects with glass, and ethereal and sculptural light fixtures.
Flos at Euroluce was a favorite with incredible fixtures by Formafantasma, Michael Anastassiades, and Philippe Starck among other talents. Paul Cocksedge’s furniture series “Excavated: Eviction” for Friedman Benda is a meaningful captivating collection. After being evicted from his studio, Cocksedge dug up cylindrical cores from the concrete floor to produce five distinct furniture pieces.
We fit in some sights… Villa Necchi Campiglio is a country house in the middle of the city. Peaceful gardens, a trellis dripping with wisteria and a cinematic pool (watch the film I Am Love) surround the modern villa. OMA’s new Prada Foundation reflects an intriguing architectural point of view through material and form alongside contemporary art installations.
